It all started in the summer of 2024.
At the time, DxAquaria was barely more than an idea and a prototype. The business officially launched in April, but like most startups, it was still in that fragile, experimental stage consisting of early tests, long nights, and one vision – to make marine diagnostic tools accessible to all.
The $2,000 Question

Puff, the Golden Puffer
Haley and Tanner, two close friends of mine and co-owners of an aquarium maintenance company called Professional Aquariums, had a client with a Golden Puffer, aptly named Puff, that was showing certain symptoms.
Puff was producing mucus.
He was lethargic.
He stopped eating.
He hovered near the sandbed.
Within just a few days, white specks and cloudy mucus patches appeared along his body.
If you’re in the hobby, or if you’re a marine aquarium professional, you know that *sinking” feeling.
Is it ich?
Is it velvet?
Is it viral?
Is it bacterial?
Could it be something worse?
The answer would determine its survival.
Ich vs. Velvet: Why It Matters
To the untrained eye, marine ich and velvet can look similar in early stages.
White spots.
Irritation.
Stress.
But they are not the same.
- Velvet can wipe out a system fast. Think rapid mortality.
- Ich is still serious, but often slower-moving and more manageable with proper protocol.
Treating velvet usually means aggressive actions like:
- Immediate quarantine
- Copper treatment
- Multiple hospital tanks
It’s a lot of work, a lot of stress, and can burn through your pockets.
Treating ich, on the other hand, depending on severity and philosophy, can allow for more measured stress-reduction strategies in certain systems.
Haley and Tanner called me because they knew I was developing a marine fish disease testing solution.
It was early.
VERY EARLY.
But this was a real-world case and an opportunity to put our kits into action.
So they sent me a system sample.
The First Real Test of DxAquaria
At the time, we were using the most preliminary version of our test.
We ran it.
Velvet: Negative.
Ich: Positive.
The speed of progression initially felt more like velvet. But the test result gave clarity.
And that clarity changed everything.
Instead of preparing for full-system copper treatment and mass fish removal, Haley and Tanner adjusted their protocol.
They focused on:
- Reducing system stress
- Stabilizing water quality
- Avoiding unnecessary overhandling
- Supporting immune function through controlled feeding
No copper in the main system.
No full tear-down.
Within four days, Puff was nearly fully recovered.

A healthy (and hungry) Puff
Out of roughly 14 fish in the system, they lost one.
In the context of an active infection? That’s a strong outcome.
Why This Moment Matters
As marine fish enthusiasts and professionals, we’ve all been there:
- Guessing between ich and velvet
- Making treatment calls under pressure
- Balancing cost, fish stress, and risk
- Hoping we chose correctly
This case showed something powerful:
✅ Accurate marine fish disease testing reduces panic.
✅ It gives confidence.
✅ It protects investments.
✅ It preserves livestock.
✅ It protects reputations.
And in this case?
✅ It also built belief.
In fact, the owner of the Golden Puffer, Mark, was so impressed by the clarity and outcome that he later became an investor in DxAquaria.
Why DxAquaria Exists
DxAquaria wasn’t designed from theory alone.
It was built because:
- Misdiagnosing ich vs. velvet is common.
- Reactive treatment is expensive.
- Guesswork stresses fish and livestock owners.
- Marine aquaria deserve better diagnostic tools.
We believe marine fish disease testing should be:
- Fast
- Clear
- Practical
- Accessible to everyone, and
- Built for real-world systems
The Golden Puffer was our first real proof of concept. And while we’ve come a long way since that early prototype, the mission hasn’t changed.
Clarity over chaos.
Data over guesswork.
Healthy systems over desperate interventions.
For Hobbyists and Pros Alike
Whether you’re:
- A hobbyist or enthusiast
- A maintenance company managing multiple client systems
- A public aquarium professional
- Building a high-end display tank
You deserve better than “it looks like…” or “maybe its…”
Marine fish disease testing isn’t about overcomplicating the hobby.
It’s about protecting what you’ve built.
Puff is our daily reminder of that.
And honestly?
We’re just getting started.
