- Receive a comprehensive digital report.
Pathogens Detected
Full spectrum, including Ich, Velvet, Uronema, and Lymphocystis Virus.
Turnaround
Results within 48-72 hours of lab receipt.
Best For
Deep-dive health audits and quantifying pathogen loads.
activeID Rapid Test (At-Home)
Instant Clarity at the Source
How it Works
A patent-pending fish DNA test kit that allows you to identify pathogens on-site using a process similar to a COVID or pregnancy test.
The Workflow
- Take a small water sample from your tank.
- Use the provided reagents to amplify DNA.
- Read the lateral flow strip for results.
Pathogens Detected
Currently optimized to detect moderate to high levels of Marine Ich and Velvet.
Turnaround
Results in under 1 hour.
Best For
Immediate screening for hobbyists and professionals who need answers now.
What does a positive fish test mean?
A positive result indicates the presence of specific pathogens. Early detection allows you to begin treatment before physical symptoms occur, significantly increasing survival rates.

Pathogens We Detect
Pathogen
Common Name
Description
Pathogen
Cryptocaryon irritans
Common Name
Marine Ich
Description
The “white spot disease” is highly contagious and can quickly overwhelm fish, leading to respiratory distress and death. Early detection is key to breaking its complex life cycle.
Pathogen
Amyloodinium ocellatum
Common Name
Marine Velvet
Description
This parasitic dinoflagellate attacks the gills and skin, causing a “velvety” or “dusty” appearance. It’s a rapid killer, especially in densely populated systems.
Pathogen
Uronema marinum
Common Name
Uronema
Description
A ciliate protozoan that can be particularly devastating, often leading to “red band syndrome” or internal infections. It can thrive in stressed environments and is notoriously difficult to eradicate once established.
Pathogen
Lymphocystis Virus
Common Name
Cauliflower disease
Description
Causes unsightly, cauliflower-like growths on the fins and skin. While often not directly fatal, it stresses fish, makes them susceptible to secondary infections, and is highly transmissible.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How does the testing procedure work?
The DNA testing procedure is designed to be as simple as possible using mail-in or at-home testing (similar to an at-home health test).
The mail-in qPCR test only requires 2 short steps of water collection and preservation ahead of mailing using the provided return mailer and label.
For the at-home RapidID test, you collect a small water sample from your tank, use our provided reagents to amplify any present DNA or RNA, and
then use a lateral flow strip to detect pathogens.
What is the fish test price and what does it include?
Our aquarium DNA kits are competitively priced. Each kit includes all materials needed for testing, whether mailing your sample (qPCR) or testing at home (ActiveID).
Compared to the cost of losing high-end livestock, the price of a test is a small investment in your tank’s long-term health.
What does a positive fish test mean for my tank?
A positive result means that the specific pathogen’s DNA was detected in your water. This is your “early warning.” It allows you to begin targeted treatment immediately, often days before your fish actually show physical spots or respiratory distress.
Can I use this for both marine and freshwater systems?
Currently, our DNA test kits are optimized exclusively for marine systems.
We are actively expanding our diagnostics to include a wider range of pathogens and systems. Be sure to subscribe to our newsletter to be the first to know when these become available.
